MEDIA RELEASE

Gatineau, Quebec, July 20, 2020 — The Canadian Museum of History and the Canadian War Museum are excited to be reopening on July 23, with a special summer offer of fun outdoor activities for visitors of all ages. Both Museums will be open Thursday through Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with enhanced safety measures. Best of all, general admission will be free throughout the summer!

Visitors to the Museum of History can enjoy dance performances and activities by Indigenous Experiences, while visitors to the War Museum can watch live military vehicle demonstrations. Self-guided outdoor activities and architectural tours will also be offered at both Museums. Although most of the indoor spaces remain temporarily closed, guided tours will be available for the magnificent Grand Hall at the Museum of History and the popular LeBreton Gallery at the War Museum. Space is limited for indoor tours, dance performances and vehicle demonstrations. Visitors are encouraged to reserve tickets in advance on the Museums’ websites to ensure a spot and learn more about the full range of activities offered at each Museum. Tickets will be available starting July 21.

The safety and security of visitors and staff is the top priority at both Museums. To ensure a safe and rewarding experience for all, the Museums are temporarily limiting indoor access and have implemented numerous safety measures in accordance with directives from public health authorities including timed online ticketing, mandatory masks indoors, physical distancing, increased cleaning and more.

A maximum of 50 visitors will be allowed inside each Museum during every two-hour block of time. Those who have not booked in advance will still have access to all self-guided outdoor activities and can sign up for a tour, dance performance or vehicle demonstration if space permits.

The Museums are planning a broader reopening in September. A wide range of virtual activities and other online programs will also continue to be offered on the popular Museum at Home webpages at historymuseum.ca and warmuseum.ca.

The Canadian Museum of History operates the Canadian Museum of History, the Canadian War Museum and the Virtual Museum of New France. Together, these Museums function as centres for research and public information on the history of Canada. Their principal role is to enhance Canadians’ knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the events, experiences, people and objects that have shaped Canada’s history and identity. Work of the Canadian Museum of History is made possible in part through financial support of the Government of Canada.
