A travelling exhibition developed by the Canadian War Museum, in partnership with the Munnings Art Museum and generously supported by the Beaverbrook Canadian Foundation.
Renowned today as one of England’s finest painters of horses, Sir Alfred Munnings created more than 40 works of art while on assignment with the Canadian War Memorials Fund. The assignment would prove pivotal in establishing him as an important and influential artist.
Commissioned in 1918 to record the activities of the Canadian Cavalry Brigade and the Canadian Forestry Corps, Munnings produced landscapes, soldiers at work behind the lines and in battle, and many paintings featuring horses — all now part of the Canadian War Museum’s Beaverbrook Collection of War Art.
