Banner

A banner with the words "we will remember" and a Canadian flag in Ottawa at the Canadian War Museum.

When Canadian service personnel were killed in Afghanistan, their bodies were brought back to Canada. They were flown to CFB Trenton, in Ontario, and, from there, driven along the Macdonald-Cartier Freeway to the coroner’s office in Toronto. Beginning in 2002, crowds gathered on bridges along this route, to bear witness to the sacrifice of Canadians far from home. This stretch of highway was officially renamed the Highway of Heroes in 2007.

One group unfurled this banner from a bridge along this route as a form of commemoration and to show respect. The banner is decorated with yellow ribbons — an official symbol of Support Our Troops. It was flown over 50 times before being retired, when a new banner was printed.
