A hollow by the side of the road in open country provided temporary shelter for No. 14 Field Ambulance of the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps during the Second World War. Canadian official war artist Alex Colville painted the scene during Operation Blockbuster, an assault by 2nd Canadian Corps into the German Rhineland which began on 26 February 1945. Medical personnel are digging slit trenches to protect themselves against enemy fire.
Alex Colville later became one of Canada’s most celebrated artists.
