In 1994, Major-General Roméo Dallaire commanded a United Nations peacekeeping mission in Rwanda, central Africa. Between April and July 1994, Hutu militias killed 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus. The peacekeepers were unable to stop the genocide. This photograph shows Dallaire with members of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda (UNAMIR) team and local refugee children. The photo was taken by Reuters photojournalist Corinne Dufka in the Amahoro Stadium when the mission ended.
On his return to Canada, Dallaire fought a public battle with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which spurred efforts to offer better recognition and treatment for soldiers returning from international deployments.
